I will present my paper on the effect of UN peace operations on the plight of civilians in civil war (co-authored with Allison Carnegie) on the panel titled `Human rights and peace: Does keeping the peace help rights?’ on Saturday from 4:00 to 5:45 p.m.┬áThe paper exploits two sources of exogenous variation in the deployment of UN blue helmets to present the first cleanly identified estimate of the impact of UN peacekeepers on civilian protection. My paper on issue linkage across international organizations will be featured on the panel titled “Legalize This: International Organizations and the Law” on Thursday from 4:00 to 5:45 p.m. Investigating the effect of EU members’ temporary UN Security Council membership on the EU budget receipts of these states, the paper empirically shows that states can leverage a temporary privileged position in one international organization to increase their bargaining power in another international organization.
